Choosing a necklace
Length decides almost everything. On most adults a 16 inch chain sits at the base of the throat, 18 inches falls just below the collarbone and is the length most pendants are designed around, and 20 inches drops onto the chest where it reads well over a shirt or knitwear. The quickest way to be sure is to measure a chain you already wear and like.
Then think about the neckline it will be worn with. A shorter chain shows above a crew neck; a longer one needs an open collar or a V to sit against skin rather than fabric. If you plan to layer two necklaces, leave at least two inches between them so neither disappears behind the other.
Carat weight behaves differently here than on a ring. A stone that looks modest on the hand reads clearly at the throat, because nothing sits beside it for comparison. If the piece is for everyday wear, a smaller stone on a slightly heavier chain will outlast a larger stone on a fine one — chains fail long before settings do.
Necklace FAQs
Which length should I choose?
18 inches suits most people and most pendant designs. Choose 16 inches for a higher, closer fit and 20 inches for a longer drop. Where a piece offers a choice of lengths, you will see it on the product page.
Is the chain solid gold?
Yes. Chains are solid 10k, 14k or 18k gold to match the pendant — not plated or filled. That is also why they hold their colour: there is no surface layer to wear through.
Will gold tarnish or turn my skin green?
Solid gold does not tarnish. Lower karats contain more alloy and can react with strong chemicals over time, so take a piece off before swimming or cleaning. White gold is finished with rhodium, which softens gradually with wear and can be refreshed.
Can I wear it every day?
Yes, with the usual care. Put it on last, after perfume and hair products, and take it off before sleeping — a chain is most often damaged by being caught or twisted at night rather than by wear itself.
Can the length be changed after it arrives?
Often, yes — shortening is straightforward and lengthening depends on the chain. Email us with your order number before sending anything back and we will tell you what is possible and what it will cost.
