How to choose an engagement ring, step by step
Settle the budget first, honestly and privately. Every decision that follows trades against that number, and fixing it early turns the search into something you enjoy rather than something you worry through. Then find her shape. Her own jewellery, the rings she stops to photograph and the things she points out say more than any guide can — and they say it faster.
Spend in this order: cut, then carat, then colour, then clarity. Cut is what makes a diamond return light, and a well cut smaller stone will out-sparkle a larger dull one in any room. On the other grades there is a sensible middle: eye clean VS2 to SI1 clarity and G to H colour are indistinguishable from flawless, colourless stones across a dinner table, at a fraction of the outlay.
For size, borrow a ring she already wears on that finger and trace the inside edge, or bring a friend into the secret. Land within one size and we handle the rest — the single exception is a band set with stones the whole way round, which cannot be resized.
Engagement ring FAQs
Engagement ring or wedding band — what is the difference?
Timing and design. The engagement ring carries the centre stone and arrives with the proposal. The wedding band is exchanged at the ceremony and worn beside it afterwards, which is why the two are often chosen as a pair.
Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes — in the laboratory and in law. A lab grown stone is crystallised carbon with the same structure, hardness and fire as a mined one, graded on the same scale by IGI or GIA. The difference is where it formed, not what it is.
How much should an engagement ring cost?
Whatever sits comfortably in your life. The old rule about months of salary came from an advertising campaign, not from tradition. Because our stones are lab grown, the same look costs a good deal less than a mined equivalent — use the price filter to see what your number buys before you fall for anything.
What counts as a simple engagement ring?
A design stripped to essentials — usually one stone on a plain band, with nothing competing for attention. Simple rings also pair most easily with whatever band you choose later, which is worth thinking about now.
What makes a ring unusual?
Anything that steps away from the round solitaire: a marquise, asscher or heart cut, a stone turned east to west across the finger, two stones sitting side by side, or the geometry and milgrain of a deco-inspired setting.
Which colour of gold should I choose?
White gold steps back and lets the diamond do the work. Yellow reads warm and traditional. Rose is the softest against most skin tones and has been the fastest growing choice of the three. Every setting here is offered in all three, in 10k, 14k and 18k.
