Lab Grown Diamonds, Explained
A lab grown diamond is a real diamond — the same crystal structure, the same hardness, the same fire — created in a controlled laboratory instead of mined from the earth. Here is everything worth knowing before you choose one.
How They're Grown
-
HPHT — High Pressure, High Temperature
A diamond seed is placed in carbon and exposed to conditions that mirror how diamonds form deep in the earth — immense pressure and heat. Carbon crystallizes around the seed, layer by layer, into a rough diamond.
-
CVD — Chemical Vapor Deposition
A diamond seed is placed in a chamber of carbon-rich gas. The gas is energized so carbon atoms settle onto the seed and build up, atom by atom, into a pure diamond crystal.
-
Then Cut, Polished & Graded
Rough lab grown diamonds are cut and polished by the same artisans, with the same tools and standards, as mined stones — then independently graded by IGI or GIA.
Lab Grown vs. Mined
The same diamond — a smarter origin.
| Attribute | Lab Grown | Mined |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Pure crystallized carbon | Pure crystallized carbon |
| Hardness | 10 on the Mohs scale | 10 on the Mohs scale |
| Brilliance & Fire | Identical optical properties | Identical optical properties |
| Certification | Independently graded by IGI & GIA | Independently graded by IGI & GIA |
| Origin | Grown in a lab, fully traceable | Mined, complex supply chains |
| Environmental Impact | Far less water, energy & land use | Significant mining footprint |
| Value | More diamond for the same budget | Premium for comparable quality |

Common Questions
Lab Grown Diamonds, Answered
Do lab grown diamonds test as real diamonds?
Yes. Because they are diamonds, they read as diamond on standard testers. Only advanced gemological equipment can identify a stone's origin, and certified stones carry a microscopic girdle inscription with their report number.
Will a lab grown diamond fade or cloud over time?
No. A lab grown diamond is as permanent as a mined one — the same hardness, the same stability. It will look the same in fifty years as it does today.
How are they graded?
Exactly like mined diamonds: cut, color, clarity, and carat, assessed by independent laboratories. Every Swan Jewel center stone comes with its IGI or GIA report.
Why are they better value?
Growing diamonds is a controlled process with a shorter supply chain than mining, and that efficiency reaches you as more carat, better cut, or higher clarity for the same budget.
Are they ethical and sustainable?
Lab grown diamonds are conflict free by nature, with a fully traceable origin and a far smaller footprint in water, energy, and land than mining.
