Choosing earrings
Decide first how they will be worn. Studs and huggies are made to be left in and forgotten; drops are for the evenings you dress for. Most people end up owning one of each rather than choosing between them, and the first pair is usually the everyday one.
Carat weight is quoted per pair, so a 1.0 carat pair of studs is two half carat stones — roughly 5mm across each. Half a carat total reads as a fine everyday sparkle, one carat is clearly visible across a room, and two carats and above is a statement. Larger stones are also heavier, and weight is what makes an earring drag at the lobe over a long day.
Then the fitting. Screw backs and locking backs hold a stud upright and are worth having on anything you would hate to lose; push backs are quicker to put on. If a lobe has stretched over the years, a flat, wider back sits more comfortably than a small one and stops the earring tipping forward.
Earring FAQs
Is the carat weight per earring or per pair?
Per pair. A 1.0 carat pair is two stones of half a carat each, which is how diamond earrings are quoted throughout the trade.
Which carat weight suits everyday wear?
Between half a carat and one carat total. It catches light without weight becoming an issue, and it survives being worn through a working day, a workout and a night out without ever feeling like too much.
Are they suitable for sensitive ears?
Solid gold is well tolerated by most people who react to costume jewellery, because the reaction is usually to nickel rather than to gold itself. Higher karats contain less alloy, so 18k is the gentlest of the three.
Can I sleep in them?
Small studs with a secure back are the only style worth leaving in overnight, and even then the backs work loose over time. Check them regularly, and take out anything that hangs before sleeping.
What if I lose one?
Email us with your order number. Because every piece is made to order rather than taken from stock, a single replacement can usually be matched to the original — tell us as soon as you can and we will quote for it.
